It is a well-known fact that beginning with the Anatolian Turkish Seljuk State era, up to the present modern times, carpets and rugs have been woven in various parts of our country. Handmade rugs vary in quality, pattern, and value depending on the region where they are woven as well as the experiences and skill of the weaver and the nature of materials used. Countless books and brochures have been published to date in our country and at road on the subject of rugs with high historic value. This book is an attempt to introduce to you Turkish rugs which are woven for commercial purposes. Most of these rugs are woven in villages by young girls living under primitive conditions. These scarcely educated young girls reflect their sentiments, illusions, joys and sorrows on the colors and designs of the rugs they are weaving. Hereke silk rugs are the best examples of the world famous handmade Turkish rugs. These rugs which are made of 100% pure silk with knots ranging from one million to four million per square meter are obtained through years of painstaking efforts. With this modest book we have tried to assist you in recognizing handmade Turkish carpets. Our joy and pride will be endless if we have been able to fulfill this task.
